Start with the low E, and follow the ball end down the hole with the bridge peg. Notice there is a slit running down each of the pegs, you want this facing towards the sound hole as pictured to accommodate each string.

Feed the string through the small hole of the first machine head. Now you need to leave some slack to wind on. Place your index finger against the nut holding the string. This helps keep the string taught while you’re winding.

For the first 3 strings you’ll be turning the machine head anti-clockwise when winding on the strings. As you begin to turn, the other end of the string will want to tuck under or over itself as it comes round,to ensure it overlaps, pull the string up but mind your eyes!

Once completely wound on, it should look something like this. The idea of keeping the string taught is to create a neat job, rather than overlaping string winds, which looks messy and is bad for tuning stability.

As you wind each string on, place your right hand over the bridge pegs and continue to turn the machinehead until close to pitch. The ball end of the string has a tendancy to pull the pins out . Place your hand firmly over the bridge to avoid this; the string will pop into place.

With the first three strings installed, grab your wire cutters and snip of the excess. Cut close to the tuning posts to make it look neat.

Now repeat the process for the final 3 strings. Note, when winding on the plain strings, you’ll want to wind on double the amount of turns, as plainstrings slip a lot more than wound ones. Remember which way you’re winding, or the string won't pass through the nut correctly.

Here’s how your plain strings should look. Again the string ends up at the bottom. This is to create a better break angle from the nut to the machine post, reducing the liklyhood of buzzing when open strings are played.

Once you’ve completed restringing, it’s time to tune up. You’ll want to give each string a good pull to stretch the strings in. Pull each string from the soundhole upwards. You don’t want to be breaking strings here so be careful.

Once all stretched in, tune up again and repeat.
